Lovely Pug Hill Review

Header_1Every now and again, another writer tells me he/she never reads reviews of his/her books.  Sometimes I consider this, even though I know I won't ever actually adhere to it.  Especially because if I didn't read reviews, I'd miss out on the especially lovely ones like this one just in from The Joplin Globe.

I Am Shizzle

No, really, I am.

Back in the blogosphere, a look around reveals that Jill Kargman, co-author of The Right Address and Wolves in Chic Clothing (and more) lists If Andy Warhol Had a Girlfriend as one of her favorite books in the Shizzle I Worship section of her website....and over on Jennifer Weiner's blog, Pug Hill is praise-worthy for a piece that almost ran in The San Francisco Examiner  (I'm in the last Q)...

Thanks to both!

(And, yes, the above more than makes up for the charming Barnes&Noble.com reader-reviewer, "Sheila S." who feels her pug could write a better book than I did.  Sheila S.: you're on my list.)

This was my first in-person, sitting in a cafe interview and I was slightly nervous going to it.  What will I say?  Will I be too chatty?  Or will I overcompensate for my chattiness and seem taciturn?  What will I wear?  Will there be cocktails? No, not really, just somewhere between that and the calm, cool, and collected version of myself I often aspire to be.  It was actually a lovely experience, and it turned out very well: the interviewer (who was very nice herself) has some very complimentary things to say about my writing, and even, about my hair :).

And, if you have a dog of your own, or are even just an admirer of dogs, Pampered Puppy is a terrific site, featuring a charming pug, Merry, who tirelessly evaluates new products, holds photo contests, and even has her own photo-blog (updated daily, and fabulous.)

The Miami Herald

My favorite line: "Pace is enjoyable and clever, throwing in sly commentary on our current social scene, a la Jane Austen." And I'm also quite partial to, "Pace delivers a final chapter as delightful as the rest of the book. So many books end predictably, and the sheer unexpectedness of this is a treat."

Pages Magazine recommends PUG HILL

Img_cover_th_1Pug Hill is one of the three new paperbacks recommended in the May/June issue of Pages Magazine (along with Mark Haddon's The Talking Horse and the Sad Girl and the Village Under the Sea and Hillary Carlip's Queen of the Oddballs.)  Here's what they say:

Pugs have become so popular that they even have their own turf in New York's Central Park, appropriately called Pug Hill.  That's where Alison Pace's character Hope McNeill goes when she needs a little comfort --even though she doesn't own a dog herself.  And lately she's been visiting the hill quite a lot.  Her romantic relationship is evaporating and her handsome co-worker is looking better all the time.  Then, when Hope's father calls her to ask if she'd speak at her parent's upcoming 40th anniversary gala, she's forced to confront her biggest fear ever --public speaking.  Playful, funny, and sometimes as awkward as the little dogs themselves, Pug Hill, is the story of a woman confronting her fears and the adorable pooches that help her do it.
